It’s a combination of things:

1) He’s the richest man alive, and thinks he can do what he wants with impunity;
2) He’s absolutely convinced that X, “the one that got away,” his brainchild that was stabbed in the back by Peter Thiel and the cabal that ran him out on a rail at PayPal, is the best idea ever and will revolutionize the world and cement his place in history;
3) He’s palling around with the stupidest people in existence (I mean, catturd, come on), and he’s become completely unmoored from reality as a result.

The process of evicting a commercial tenant in California

Do not resort to self-help measures

Some landlords may find all these steps to be frustrating and confusing. What they should not resort to, however, is self-help measures.

Landlords should not change the locks on the doors themselves. They should not throw all the tenant’s stuff out onto the sidewalk. They should not threaten the tenant as a means of demanding payment.

Instead, landlords should ensure they are meeting all the legal requirements of a valid eviction. While it can take time, it is better to evict a commercial tenant legally rather than risk having the eviction thrown out.

Mr. Musk, who leads SpaceX, Tesla and Twitter, has become the most dominant player in space as he has steadily amassed power over the strategically significant field of satellite internet. Yet faced with little regulation and oversight, his erratic and personality-driven style has increasingly worried militaries and political leaders around the world, with the tech billionaire sometimes wielding his authority in unpredictable ways.

But Mr. Musk’s near total control of satellite internet has raised alarms. A combustible personality, the 52-year-old’s allegiances are fuzzy…he alone can decide to shut down Starlink internet access for a customer or country, and he has the ability to leverage sensitive information that the service gathers. Such concerns have been heightened because no companies or governments have come close to matching what he has built.

In Ukraine, some fears have been realized. Mr. Musk has restricted Starlink access multiple times during the war, people familiar with the situation said. At one point, he denied the Ukrainian military’s request to turn on Starlink near Crimea, the Russian-controlled territory, affecting battlefield strategy. Last year, he publicly floated a “peace plan” for the war that seemed aligned with Russian interests.

Sans-serif swastika may have serifs added for historical consistency.

Any replacement letters or symbols would require a permit to ensure “consistency with the historic nature of the building” and to make sure additions are safely attached to the sign, Patrick Hannan, spokesperson for the Department of Building Inspection said earlier this week.

Erecting a sign on top of a building also requires a permit, Hannan said Friday.

“Planning review and approval is also necessary for the installation of this sign. The city is opening a complaint and initiating an investigation,” he said in an email.

Two teachers called out far-right activities at their German school. Then they had to leave town.

But Teske and Nickel’s experience has aroused fears in the German capital that the far right has gained a greater foothold in some parts of the former East Germany than many thought. Experts say that especially in the south of Brandenburg state, where Burg is located, an entire network of tattoo parlors, nightclubs, youth groups and fan clubs of the FC Energie Cottbus soccer team spread the messaging of the far-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD, party.

Earlier this month, Brandenburg state’s domestic intelligence service declared Young Alternative for Germany, the AfD’s wing for supporters age 14 and above, as particularly radical and put it under official surveillance as a “proven right-wing extremist” group.

Earlier this month, Brandenburg state’s domestic intelligence service declared Young Alternative for Germany, the AfD’s wing for supporters age 14 and above, as particularly radical and put it under official surveillance as a “proven right-wing extremist” group.

The reasons for its particular appeal in eastern Germany are manifold. East Germany was a communist dictatorship until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and many people there lost their jobs after Germany’s 1990 reunification. Residents still speak of feeling like second-class citizens compared to Germans in the country’s west.

AfD has used the coronavirus pandemic and the influx of 1.2 million Ukrainian refugees since Russia invaded Ukraine as opportunities to promote an “us vs. them” narrative and to offer what seem like simple answers to complex problems, experts say.

Many think AfD could emerge as the strongest party when Brandenburg and the fellow eastern states of Saxony and Thuringia hold elections next year.

I never turn the wifi off, but my kindle fire is only for streaming, so it spends a lot of time sleeping in its drawer. Sometimes when I wake it up, it takes a few minutes to connect.

It doesn’t stay charged for very long even when it’s asleep — could this be a low power issue?

Jesus.

Two teachers called out far-right activities at their German school. Then they had to leave town.

Before Reunification, every town in East Germany had its own little community center where you could go on weekends to hang out, watch a movie or dance to records or even the occasional live band.

They were run by the Communist Party, of course, but they provided a vital social function. After reunification, those places all closed, most of the jobs dried up and the people had almost nowhere to go, especially the youth.

Who stepped in to fill that social gap? The Right-Wing populist/nationalist parties like the NPD or the AfD. They gave the people a sense of community and agency that they felt they had lost for decades. They offered social events and films and family picknicks and like their East German predecessors, used them to promote their party ideology.

Minnesota Democratic Governor Tim Walz, during a recent appearance in Iowa, drew stark comparisons between his state and the Republican-led home of the first presidential primary.

While Minnesota enshrined abortion as a “fundamental right” earlier this year, Iowa Republican Governor Kim Reynolds signed a restrictive 6-week abortion ban into law earlier this month.

Additionally, in January, Reynolds “signed into law a bill that bars transgender females from participating in girls’ high school and college sports,” while Minnesota passed a law in March declaring the state a “refuge” for trans people seeking gender-affirming care.

I’m not afraid to say, I don’t know if you can get much different,” the Democratic leader said during his speech. “Talking about restricting reproductive freedoms and we’re expanding healthcare to others. As I said, talking about book bans — we’re talking about banning hunger. We’re expanding and made the nation’s most aggressive climate change push of our 2040 plan. And I think, then to look at the numbers, just this last week, CNBC, a pretty respected poll in this, ranked Minnesota the fifth best state for business, bumping Texas, for the first time, out of that spot. We were ranked as the fourth best state to live in. Good states are places where the government provides the services that they need to, whether transportation, education, health care; and then stays out of your personal business. And I will let the leader talk about this. I’ll make this case.

Walz continued, “We’re used to bad things happening fast and good things taking a long time. I’d make the case to the people of Iowa: The governor and this Republican majority is the only thing standing between you and nice things, like paid family leave if you have to get chemotherapy treatment. You shouldn’t have to be worried about dying from that. And we care deeply about making sure our children are served on this. Not just forcing birth and rapes and incest issues or whatever else is trying to be done with this. But caring for them deeply, providing their families with healthcare — prenatal, postnatal health care and food. I think there are two examples of the direction we want to go. One was inclusive, hopeful, and I would make the case. I think it was summed up in one picture, I announced it at a school — Webster Elementary School — that their classmates would all be getting breakfast and lunch without having to worry about it and the children spontaneously hugged us. That was Minnesota session, I don’t know if you got an image of the Republicans.”

The pictures in the article are not pretty. And, from the article -

Rising evidence is pointing to the possibility that leprosy has become endemic in the southeastern U.S. with Florida being named among the top reported states.

*snip*

The number of reported leprosy cases across the country has doubled over the past decade, according to the CDC. Citing data from the National Hansen’s Disease Program, the CDC says there were 159 new cases reported in the U.S. in 2020. Nearly 70% of these new cases were reported in Florida, California, Louisiana, Hawaii, New York and Texas.

Florida stands out in the report for two reasons: Central Florida alone accounted for nearly 20% of the total number of cases reported nationally and several new-case patients in central Florida demonstrated no clear evidence of zoonotic exposure or traditionally known risk factors.

There have been four sitting presidents who have not attended any of the inaugural ceremonies of their successors: John Adams (1801), John Quincy Adams (1829), and Andrew Johnson (1869), and Donald Trump (2021). Two others, Martin Van Buren (1841) and Woodrow Wilson (1921), were inside the U.S. Capitol signing last-minute legislation but did not attend the public ceremony outside. It is unknown why Van Buren did not participate, as he and William Henry Harrison were cordial and Van Buren even hosted Harrison for dinner at the White House before the inauguration. One possible explanation was that his son, Martin Van Buren Jr., was ill and he left to be with him. Woodrow Wilson accompanied his successor, Warren G. Harding, to the Capitol but did not stay for the public ceremony because of his poor health. Wilson had suffered a stroke in 1919, and was still experiencing health issues when he left office. Finally, Richard Nixon (1974) resigned the office of the presidency on August 9, 1974, and did not stay to witness his successor Gerald R. Ford take the Oath of Office in the White House East Room. While the sitting president was not there, this occasion was considered a presidential succession and not a traditional inauguration

Props to the White House Historical Association for compiling this info!

Now that Barbie is back in the news, I want to suggest a different Barbie movie Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story. Saw it back when the Biograph still existed in DC and there was a great place to watch art flix. Fuck, I can’t belive it’s been that long — 1996. Yikes, again.

Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story is a 1987 American experimental short biographical film that portrays the last 17 years of singer Karen Carpenter’s life, as she struggled with anorexia. Directed by Todd Haynes, the film uses Barbie dolls as actors, as well as documentaries and artistic footage. Superstar was co-written and co-produced by Haynes and Cynthia Schneider, with an unauthorized soundtrack consisting mostly of the hit songs of The Carpenters. It was filmed over a ten-day period at Bard College in the summer of 1985. Barry Ellsworth collaborated on the film and was the cinematographer for the Barbie themed interior segments of the film.

ETA - Barbie gets abused with (a razor blade?) to show Karen’s anorexia profession

Is that even legal?

The New York times says:

Jason Torchinsky, a Republican election lawyer, said he believed Mr. Trump was barred from using Save America donations to pay his personal legal expenses now that he’s a candidate, arguing that doing so would be “an excessive contribution” under Federal Election Commission precedent. And he said Mr. Trump could not use campaign money at all, because it would qualify as personal use.

Tropical weather update.

Tropical Storm Doksuri passed into the Chinese Met Office’s area of responsibility when it made landfall.

China’s Met office has issued a torrential rain, high wind, and extreme lighting warning for Beijing.

The storm is clearly visible on their national radar.

China’s Met Office National Radar
Satellite Photograph (clearly shows the tropical storm including the eye)

Further east, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center has downgraded Khanaun to a tropical storm (55 knots) but that is only expected to be temporary. The storm is expected to cross Okinawa at a peak strength of 90 knots, then twenty-four hours later barrel into China in the Shanghai area.
Khanaun Predicted Track

In the Central Pacific Hurricane Center area of responsibility, all is quiet.

In the Eastern Pacific, the National Hurricane Center notes the tropical wave over southeastern Nicaragua has moved into the Pacific Ocean. Their prognostication hasn’t changed: The storm is expected (80% chance) of becoming a tropical cyclone while moving up the coastline of Central America and Mexico in the next seven days. Depending on weather, the storm or its remnants could be blown back into the American Southwest. (The majority of rainfall in the desert southwest comes from dying tropical systems.)
7 Day Eastern North Pacific Graphical Tropical Outlook

In the North Atlantic, the tropical wave situated over southest Georgia has dissipated. In the central North Atlantic, Disturbance One is about a thousand miles east of the Leeward Islands. Their prognostication hasn’t changed: The storm system has a 70% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone whilst turning north well-away from any land.
Atlantic 7 Day Graphical Tropical Outlook

Elsewhere there are no systems of concern. The statistical peak day for tropical cyclones is September 10.
